31, 2025Is your toilet clogged and the plunger just isn’t doing the job? Don’t panic! There are several effective ways to clear the blockage without calling for professional help—at least not yet. At Langley Home Plumbing, we’ve seen it all and know which methods work best. In this guide, we’ll share 7 proven ways to unclog your toilet when a plunger fails and when to know it’s time to call an expert.
Start with the simplest solution: pour hot (not boiling) water into the toilet bowl after adding some dish soap. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes. The combination of heat and lubrication can help break down the clog. This easy method often saves the day before you try anything more aggressive.
Pour one cup of baking soda followed by two cups of vinegar, into the toilet. This natural reaction creates fizz that can loosen the clog. Wait 30 minutes, then try flushing. It’s safe, eco-friendly, and often surprisingly effective.
When the clog is too deep for hot water or baking soda, use a toilet auger (also called a closet snake). Insert the auger into the drain and twist until you feel resistance. This physically breaks apart the blockage so water can flow freely again.
If you don’t have a toilet auger, a wire hanger can be a quick DIY substitute. Straighten it out, wrap the tip in a soft cloth to protect the porcelain, and gently push the blockage. Alternatively, fill a plastic bottle with warm water, invert it into the drain, and squeeze hard to create pressure.
A wet/dry shop vacuum can also do the trick. Make sure it’s safe for liquids, then insert the hose into the toilet bowl and vacuum the clog out. Be sure to clean and disinfect the vacuum afterward.
No plunger? No problem. You can wrap a mop head in a plastic bag and use it like a plunger. Another option is the cling film method—seal the toilet bowl with cling wrap, press down to create pressure, and flush. This creates suction similar to a plunger.
If none of these methods work, or if the problem keeps coming back, it may be a sign of a serious plumbing issue like a sewer line blockage. That’s when it’s best to call a licensed plumber.
